Resumo: Smoking is considered by the World Health Organization as an epidemic disease and serious public health problem. Thus, health warnings printed on cigarette packs have been imposed by lawmakers. The objective was to show the college smokers and nonsmokers the health warnings on cigarette packs. A qualitative research was used based on social representation. 25 subjects were interviewed, of whom 11 were smokers. The categories emerged from the analyses: the meaning of illness, negative feeling, aversion to the images, the meaning of death, the third person effect, and negative feelings related to smoking and family awareness. We found that tobacco users recognize the dangers of its use, have negative feelings about the pictures, but they show aversion to this kind of warning. We emphasize the need for educational measures by nurses, educating the public regarding the use of tobacco.

Assim, advertências sanitárias impressas em maços de cigarros foram impostas por lei aos fabricantes. O objetivo foi identificar a representação de universitários fumantes e não fumantes acerca das advertências sanitárias nos maços de cigarro. Realizou-se pesquisa qualitativa com base na representação social. Foram entrevistados 25 sujeitos, dos quais 11 eram tabagistas. Da análise dos dados emergiram as categorias: significado de doença, sentimento negativo, significado de aversão às imagens, significado de morte, efeito terceira pessoa, sentimento negativo referente a familiares tabagistas e conscientização. Identificamos que os usuários do tabaco reconhecem os malefícios do mesmo, relacionam o cigarro à doença, apresentam sentimento negativo em relação às imagens, mas demonstram certa aversão a esse tipo de advertência. Salienta-se a necessidade de medidas educativas por enfermeiros, conscientizando a população sobre seu comportamento frente ao tabaco.El tabaquismo es considerado por la Organización Mundial de la Salud enfermedad epidémica y grave problema de salud pública. Advertencias de salud en paquetes de cigarrillos fueron impuestas por ley a los fabricantes. El objetivo fue identificar la representación de estudiantes fumadores y no fumadores acerca de las advertencias de salud en los paquetes de cigarrillos. Investigación cualitativa basada en la representación social. Fueron entrevistados 25 sujetos, 11 fumadores. Del análisis, emergieron estas categorías: significado de la enfermedad, sentimiento negativo, significado de aversión a las imágenes, significado de la muerte, efecto en terceras personas, sentimiento negativo referente a familiares tabaquistas y concientización. Los usuarios de tabaco reconocieron los daños de esto, relacionaron el cigarrillo a la enfermedad, presentaron sentimiento negativo a las imágenes, pero señalaron aversión a esto tipo de advertencia.
