Resumo: | The present paper is about green roofs, structures that have vegetation on them and help reduce the current problems generated by accelerated urbanization unconcerned with the environment. Such technique brings aesthetic benefits, as it can be used as landscaping, and has spread fast to many countries due to current environmental appeal as well as apparent degradation of the environment caused by pollution and development of cities. However, this technique was already known in ancient times and in Germanic countries and nowadays research on them has begun to be intensified in English-speaking countries. There are two main types of green roofs: intensive and extensive. Extensive green roofs support small plants that adapt to almost any situation and do not require constant maintenance. The intensive ones support larger plants in terms of depth and weight as well as they require more maintenance. Both intensive and extensive green roofs demand well scaled layers to ensure perfect operation of the system. Waterproofing and drainage are items of great importance to ensure durability and functionality, avoiding degradation of the structure due to water and requiring minimal maintenance of the garden. By building a green cover it is promoted greater thermal insulation as the rays do not directly affect the structure of the slab and it is more difficult for the heat to reach the inner rooms of the building. This phenomenon makes it possible to save on the use of air conditioning, reducing electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emission in the atmosphere. The use of green roofs enables the creation of an ecosystem attracting insects, birds and other animals, assisting in the maintenance of species and integrating nature with urbanization. The main benefits of building these roofs are flood control as it reduces storm water runoffs, rainwater collection, reuse of this water, improved air quality and greater thermal and acoustic insulation. The new mentality of building with sustainability reinforces the value and importance of green roofs. Therefore, this study aims at showing the benefits, limitations, care related to green roofs, as well as developing a manual to build a laminar extensive green roof. |
