Resumo: The aim of the present research was to confirm the phenotypic identification of Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains isolated from two markets of fresh and frozen oysters on a beach at the Northeastern of Brazil by molecular biology testes. In order to achieve this goal, phenotypic identification was performed by dichotomous key, while genotypic tests were performed by detection of gene vib, to confirmation of genus Vibrio, and gene tl, to specie V. parahaemolyticus. Also, the virulence potential of strains was investigated by Kanagawa and urease tests. Of the 15 tested strains, 14 were confirmed to genus Vibrio and specie V. parahaemolyticus. Twelve (86%) strains were positive to Kanagawa test; however no strains were positive to urease test. Thus, we concluded that the dichotomous key was efficient in the identification of V. parahaemolyticus and the marketed oysters are able of transmitting gastroenteritis to consumer if they are eaten raw.
