Resumo: The cowpea bean in Amazônia is the basic food of the low income group, mainly the rural population. Toe objective of this research is to study the sfructure and composition of cowpea market from 1970/1986. Therefore, a simultaneous equation model formed by three economic relations: demand, price and supply was used. The results showed that the cowpea demand and supply are inelastic to the price and that the supply is very sensitive to the variations in wage rate. It also showed that the supply increased at a higher rate than the consumption. One concludes that cowpea demand is inelastic in relation to consumer income.

Contudo, permanece à margem dos mecanismos de comercialização. O objetivo .do trabalho é o de estudar a estrutura e o comportamento do mercado de caupi, no período de 1970/86. Para isto, utilizou-se um modelo econométrico simultâneo, constituído por três relações econômicas: demanda, preço e oferta. Os resultados obtidos mostram que a demanda e a oferta de caupi são inelásticas a preço e que a oferta é sobremodo sensível às variações de preço da mão-de-obra. Mostram também que a oferta de caupi .evoluiu à taxa global superior ao crescimento do consumo.
