Resumo: A comparative analysis was made of technologies used by small farmers in the semi-arid "Sertão", "agreste" and humid east regions. lnformation collected by SUDENE, in collaboration with the World Bank, was used. The results showed that commercial farmers with market orientation, in the three regions, are technically more efficient than subsistence farmers. ln summary, if the objetive of the study is to increase the income of small farmers in the Northeast, the statistical results suggest that a program of incentives to transfer manpower from the humid east are to the "Sertão", other things being equal, would results in a better allocation of these resources. The rural extension service sould redouble its efforts to give technical assistance to these farmers to aid in a better allocation of their resources.

A informação utilizada foi coletada na pesquisa - Tamanho Típico da Unidade de Produção Agrícola ·do Nordeste - efetuada em 1973, por intermédio do convênio SUDENE/Banco Mundial. Os resultados sugerem que os estabelecimentos familiares, com orientação de mercado das três regiões, são tecnicamente mais eficientes que os estabelecimentos familiares de subsistência. Em suma, se o objetivo for o de aumentar a renda dos pequenos produtores do Nordeste, os resultados estatísticos sugerem que o programa de incentivos para mobilizar contingentes de mão-de-obra do Leste Úmido para o Sertão, ceteris paribus, ajudaria a melhor alocação deste recurso.
