Resumo: The aims of the social-historical study are: to describe the situation existing during the implementation of the Program of Action to fi ghting Tuberculosis in Brazil in 1961. It analyzes the implications of this turning-point in order to stress the importance of the assistance from nursing practice in the fi ght against tuberculosis. The analysis of the documental corpus, based on the concepts of habitus, fi eld and symbolic power of Pierre Bourdieu, was based on written and oral documents and secondary sources. With the investigation we found out that the reconfi guration of nursing care took place under the leadership of a nurse whose symbolic capital conferred power and prestige to implement the necessary changes. The performance of the nurse permitted the introduction of a new program and helped to demarcate the space and the importance of registered nurses in the assistance of tuberculosis carriers.

A análise do corpus documental, apoiada pelos conceitos de habitus, campo e poder simbólico de Pierre Bourdieu, se fez com base em documentos escritos e orais e fontes secundárias. A pesquisa permitiu constatar que a reconfi guração da assistência de enfermagem se deu sob a liderança de uma enfermeira cujo capital simbólico lhe conferia poder e prestígio para implementar as mudanças necessárias. A atuação dessa enfermeira possibilitou a implantação do novo programa e contribuiu para demarcar o espaço e a importância da enfermeira diplomada na assistência aos portadores de tuberculose.Pesquisa histórica y social cuyos objetivos son: describir la coyuntura de implantación del Programa de Acción en la lucha contra la tuberculosis en Brasil, en 1961 y analizar los alcances de esa coyuntura para reconocimiento de la importancia que tiene la asistencia de enfermería en el combate a la tuberculosis. El análisis del corpus documental, apoyado por los conceptos de habitus, campo y poder simbólico de Pierre Bourdieu, se realizó basándose en documentos escritos y orales y fuentes secundarias. La investigación permitió constatar que la reconfi guración de la asistencia de enfermería se consumó bajo el liderazgo de una enfermera cuyo capital simbólico le confería poder y prestigio para implementar los cambios necesarios.
