Importância socioeconômica e ambiental do Parque Nacional de Ubajara para as cidades de seu entorno (Estado do Ceará)

The extension of green areas has been reduced by agricultural activities and increasing urbanization. To fulfill the biological conservation in the remaining vegetational environments were created the first protected areas in the world. In Brazil, these areas are coordinated by the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC), which classifies the Conservation Units (UCs) as integral protection or as sustainable use, which is formed with different categories in each of them, distinguished for its regulation. The Conservation Units undertake a part beyond the protection of the area, also being responsible for giving socioeconomic support to the communities surrounding. The Ubajara National Park (PNU) is located at Chapada da Ibiapaba, west of Ceará State. It is an integral protection UC, founded by the Decree nº 45.954, on 30 April 1959. It currently occupies an area of 6.288 hectares, covering the Ubajara, Tianguá, and Frecheirinha municipalities. PNU is an important economic factor of the region, due mostly to tourism since it holds various trails, Ubajara Cave, and a cable car which has been closed since 2015 for its maintenance. The Park is a substantial factor for the city’s economy, since it is the main touristic attribute, attracting thousands of visitors every year, therefore promoting socio-economics earnings, of which is an income source and employment to the population. Besides, its ecosystem services influence people’s health and well-being. Hence, this study aimed to identify by the perceptions of local merchants the aspects of the PNU’s socioeconomic relevance for the Ubajara city. Structured interviews detected that the Park is needed for the continuation of commercial establishments as well as for Ubajara’s economy. Even with fewer visitors by the cable car paralyzation, the new trails keep motivating the visitation at the Park. As well, linking the protection of the area by the presence of the PNU to environmental improvements in the municipality and region. Thus the Park shows the capacity of creating environmental, social, and economic benefits, privileging Ubajara and Ibiapaba locations. And it emphasizes the relevance of creating and maintaining protected areas.
