Resumo: The article aims to analyze the place that the Northeast occupies in Brazilian historiography through two contrasting social constructions of the region arising from: 1) the experience of drought; 2) rhe regional work of Gilberto Freyre. I counterpose the texts produced by Freyre and his supporters, who espouse a vision of the Northeast as a cradle of nationality with the repeated occurrences of droughts from the late nineteenth century, which represent an alternative vision of the region, identified with poverty, migration and corruption. Thus, the Northeast appears in historical writing asan ambiguous formation, and which has prevented the creation of a collectively held homogenous vision.

A partir não só dos textos produzidos por Freyre e seus correligionários, que compõem uma visão do nordeste como berço da nacionalidade, contrapomos as repetidas ocorrências das secas a partir do final do século XIX, que compõem uma outra visão do regional, identificado com a pobreza, as migrações e a corrupção.
