The industry of ornamental fish has a remarkable importance to the sustainable development of the aquatic resources in Brazil. The objective of this work was to verify whether the productive chain of ornamental fishes in Fortaleza and part of its Metropolitan Region (RMF) show sustainability. In order to gather data and information about the ornamental fish market and sustainability, questionnaires were applied to producers and sellers in the RMF whose data were codified and analyzed using the SPSS – Statistic Package for Scientific Studies, version 12.0. The results showed that the two largest producers in the RMF showed quite similar yields and identical production systems; however, it was not possible to verify whether they were concerned with the treatment of their effluents. Therefore, we could verify that the ornamental fish productive chain in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza did not attend to all presupposes of the sustainable fish farming and commerce. However, the sector shows some tendency to become sustainable, given that some entrepreneurs of both sectors already had established some sustainable practices in their firms.
