In the context of searching for alternative energy sources, biodiesel produced from castor oil has been of interest, since this contract is related to the country´s reduction of external dependence, environmental benefits and resource generration for economy. Based on the foregoing and assuming the importance of cost management for the agro energy sector in the country, the paper aims to present mathematical arguments to aid in decision making about a possible investment in castor bean for the above mentioned purpose, specifically when the investor is the small producer and there is a non-intercropped non-syndicated cultivation, meaning it only grows castor bean. Therefore, methods of economic viability are used and calculated from the results of the cash flow designed for investment. The methodology adopted by the study was based on data collection conducted in central hinterland of ceará and current information about castor bean market. It was also held a bibliographical research to support the theoretical fundaments of the study. Three scenarios were considered for analysis: the pessimist, realist and optimist, properly defined. The results presented economic and financial viability for the scenarios realistic and optimistic, but under adverse conditions, the investment is not profitable.
