Resumo: This is a qualitative study grounded in Heidegger's existential phenomenology, which aimed to understand the meaning of infant death to the bereaved parents. We interviewed six parents who have experienced the death of an infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Three categories emerged: the infant's death: shattered dreams, experiencing the infant's death; and overcoming mourning. Based on the study we apprehended that the parents experience intense suffering in their mourning, since the infant's death represents the death of a dream. Thus, nursing needs to take an attitude for care and welcome the bereaved parents, helping them to face the process in a less painful manner.

Foram entrevistados seis pais que experienciaram a morte do filho na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal. Da análise emergiram três categorias: morte do filho, a morte dos sonhos; vivenciando o momento da morte do bebê, e; transcendendo o luto. Apreendemos com o estudo que há sofrimento intenso desses pais em seu luto, pois a morte de um filho ainda bebê significa a morte de um sonho, sendo assim a enfermagem precisa assumir uma postura de cuidado e acolhimento desses seres enlutados, ajudando-os a enfrentar esse processo de forma menos dolorosa.Se trata de estudio cualitativo basado en la fenomenología existencial de Heidegger y tuvo como objetivo comprender el significado de la muerte del hijo recién nacido a los padres desconsolados. Fueron entrevistados seis padres que han experimentado la muerte del hijo en la Unidad de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal. Del análisis emergieron tres categorías: muerte del hijo, muerte de los sueños; viviendo el momento de la muerte del bebé; Y trascendiendo al luto.
