The main focus of this paper was to analyze the attributes that influence Ceara´s workers to remain unemployed for long spans. The methodology used to attack the problem was the estimation of a probit model in order to explain the chance of a worker to remain unemployed longer than one year period. The data used came from the National Household Survey (PNAD). According to the results there is a strong negative effect on the chance of a male individual to remain unemployed for more than one year. On the other hand, schooling diminishes drastically the chance of an individual to remain unemployed. Age also is an important factor to explain unemployment for more than one year. The results show that the older is the individual, the greater is the chance to remain unemployed for a long period, and the situation is worse if he/she is more than 46 years old. Finally, it was found that race discrimination does not seem to be a problem in Ceara´s job market.
