Resumo: OBJETIVO: The objective was to assess the knowledge of patients with diabetes mellitu s type 2 (DM2) before and after educational interventions. METODOLOGIA: This is a prospective intervention study with 87 patients enrolled in the program HIPERDIA. Data were collected between August and October 2011, using a questionnaire and semistructure d questionnaire before and after the educational interventions to assess their knowledge about DM2. RESULTADOS: Of the sample 67.8% were women, 45.3% were aged between 51 and 68 years, 73.6% had incomes of up to two minimum wages and 63.2% have finished el ementary school. Regarding knowledge before the intervention 80.0% had little to good level of knowledge, while in the post - test most had from good to more than good knowledge, with 29%, 4% and 58.8%, respectively. CONCLUSÃO: It is concluded that health ed ucation is an instrument in the construction of knowledge focused on adherence to treatment and a simple means to increase the quality of life.

METODOLOGIA: Trata - se de estudo prospectivo e de intervenção, com 87 pacientes cadastrados no programa HPERDIA. RESULTADOS: Os dados foram coletados entre agosto e outubro de 2011, utilizando - se formulário semiestruturado e questionário antes e após as intervenções educativas para avaliar o conhecimento destes acerca do DM2. Da amostra 67,8% eram mulheres, 45,3% tinham idade entre 51 e 68 anos, 73,6% p ossuíam renda de até dois salários mínimos e 63,2% cursaram o ensino fundamental. Quanto ao conhecimento, antes da intervenção 80,0% tinham de pouco a bom nível, enquanto no pós - teste a maioria teve um conhecimento de bom a mais que bom, com 29%, 4% e 58,8 %, respectivamente. CONCLUSÃO: Conclui - se que a educação em saúde é um instrumento na construção de saberes voltados à adesão ao tratamento e um meio simples para o aumento da qualidade de vidaOBJETIVO: El objetivo fue evaluar el conocimiento de los pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) antes y después de las intervenciones educativas. METODOLOGIA: Se trata de un estudio de intervención prospectivo con 87 p acientes inscritos en el programa de HPERDIA. Los datos fueron recogidos entre agosto y octubre de 2011, mediante un cuestionario y un cuestionario semi - estructurado antes y después de las intervenciones educativas para evaluar sus conocimientos acerca de la DM2. RESULTADOS: De la muestra un 67,8% eran mujeres, el 45,3% tenían entre 51 y 68 años, el 73,6% tenían ingresos de hasta dos salarios mínimos y el 63,2% han terminado la escuela primaria. En cuanto a los conocimientos antes de la intervención el 80,0 % tenía poco que buen nivel, mientras que el post - test la mayoría tenían un buen conocimiento del bien, la mayoría con un 29%, 4% y 58,8%, respectivamente.
