No Brasil, especificamente no Ceará, esta realidade é crescente. O Estado dispõe de uma capacidade própria de geração instalada de 1.066,034 MW, distribuída em 15 usinas eólicas num total de 448,134 MW,1 Pequena Central Hidrelétrica - PCH (4,0 MW) e 11 Usinas Termelétricas de Energia - UTE (613,9 MW). Nesta configuração, o Ceará retomou a liderança nacional na capacidade de geração de energia elétrica a partir dos ventos o que com a futuro operação de mais 2 usinas eólicas previstas pelo Programa de Incentivos as Fontes Alternativas - PROINFA, aumentará consideravelmente a participação de fonte eólica na sua matriz energética. A capacidade de geração eólica instalada será 5 vezes maior que a de 2009, com um acréscimo de 1598 GWh/ano em 2010, através da instalação de 27 empreendimentos outorgados pela Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica - ANEEL. Destes, 25 são de geração limpa e renovável, aproveitando o potencial eólico e solar do Estado, sendo responsáveis por 99,5% da potência prevista, contra os atuais 84,93% empreendimentos em operação do tipo UTE. Desta forma, e ainda com a inclusão de novos projetos de geração limpa de energia elétrica, o estado do Ceará poderá passar, nos próximos anos, de uma condição de demandador de energia elétrica para a condição de auto-suficiência. O primeiro leilão de energia exclusivo para fonte eólica fomenta a inclusão de novos empreendimentos no Ceará. O Governo local como resposta as necessidades crescentes do setor eólico criou recentemente a Câmara do Setor Eólico - CSEólica, como forma de contribuição na consolidação da cadeia produtiva do setor no Estado.
