The act of eating away from home is a reality of the present society. Out-of-home food choices include street foods, which have the advantage of being convenient because they are in places that are easily accessible and have a low cost. The objective of this study was to document the lives of women involved in the street food trade in different neighborhoods of Fortaleza, investigating the reasons that led them to enter such a market niche, the roles that food assumes in their lives and how this sale collaborates with the family budget. Interviews were conducted with four women and field observation activities at their workplaces. It is possible to conclude that the majority of women joined the middle to supplement their income and the option for street food was due to the predilection for cooking and the ease of starting a business that does not require high investment. The relations of friendship provided by the interactions of commerce were all pointed out as one of the great incentives for work. The income generated by the sales does not supply the family budget alone, and is an addition to the other family incomes.
