The drílling of wells for groundwater abstraction, generally occur from the need to expand the use or pursuit of higher quality, especially when the resources of surface water, do not have sufficient quantities or qualities to stakeholders. In the State of Piauí, have been drilled over 26,000 wells throughout its history, including hand dug wells, tubular or piezometers, and these currently take several forms, such as; in use, disabled, abandoned or grounded. This work has the objective of presenting historical accounts of the puncture tube wells in the State of Piauí, and also the tools developed by CPRM -Geological Survey of Brazil to subsidize the process of “Management of Groundwater Resources in the State of Piauí”. For this work a quantum wells of 25,345 registered in the Information System of Groundwater (SIAGAS) was used until 2011. The State of Piauí with approximately 123 inhabitants/well, 1 well per 10 km2, and with the States of Ceará, Pernambuco and Bahia, with roughly 39% of registered wells in SIAGAS. Even with this amount of inserted wells in the State, Piauí still has several areas with problems in supply. The SIAGAS and Integrated Monitoring Network of Groundwater (RIMAS) are tools that contribute to the management of water sources capable of supporting decision making by public administrators.
