Resumo: This study was accomplished with the aim of describing the socio-demographic and economical characteristics, of time in the function and support received by the family caregiver of elderly with ischemic cerebrovascular stroke. This is a descriptive and exploratory study with quantitative approach, carried out with elderly caregivers assisted at a reference neurology clinic in the city of Fortaleza-CE-Brazil, from May to August 2009. 52 family caregivers participated in the study, of which 32.8% were aged between 41 and 50 years; 92.3% female; 75% living with the elder; 63.5% were their son or daughter, followed by partners in 23.1% of the cases; 46.2% had only secondary education; 57.7% unemployed and had been caregivers for more than three years; 30.8% had income up to two minimum wages and 55.8% without any kind of support. These data reinforce even more the need of public policies to protect the elderly and also his caregiver.

Trata-se de um estudo descritivo e exploratório com abordagem quantitativa, realizado com cuidadores de idosos acompanhados em ambulatório de neurologia, referência no município de Fortaleza-CE-Brasil, de maio a agosto de 2009. Participaram do estudo 52 cuidadores familiares, sendo 32,8% com idade entre 41 e 50 anos; 92,3% mulheres; 75% com moradia junto ao idoso; 63,5% filhos, seguidos dos cônjuges em 23,1% dos casos; 46,2% com apenas o ensino médio; 57,7% desempregados e cuidadores há mais de três anos; 30,8% com renda de até dois salários e 55,8% com nenhum tipo de apoio. Esses dados reforçam a necessidade de políticas públicas de proteção ao idoso e, também, ao cuidador.Estudio llevado a cabo con el objetivo de describir las características sociales, demográficas, económicas, de tiempo en la función y del apoyo recibido por el cuidador familiar de anciano con accidente cerebral vascular isquémico. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo y de investigación con planteo cuantitativo, con participación de cuidadores de ancianos acompañados en una acreditada policlínica de neurología, en la ciudad de Fortaleza –CE/ Brasil, de mayo a agosto del 2009. Participaron del estudio 52 cuidadores familiares, de los cuales un 32,8% tenía entre 41 y 50 años de edad; un 92,3% mujeres; el 75% vivía con el anciano, un 63,5% hijos, seguido por los cónyuges en un 23,1% de los casos; un 46,2% apenas con enseñanza secundaria; un 57,7% desempleados y cuidadores por más de tres años, un 30,8% con renta de hasta dos sueldos y un 55,8% sin cualquier tipo de apoyo.
