Resumo: This article aims to highlight the theoretical, analytical and ethical perspective on contemporary cities contained in the work of Jane Jacobs. Particularly in reference to the relationship between environment built of cities and urban vitality, with emphasis on the political and economic aspects linked to the environment built. For this task a dialogue with the work of Jane Jacobs is established from two books: Death and Life of Great Cities whose first edition dates from 1961, The Economy of Cities published in 1969. Two other books appear in the text as elements of corroboration of some contextualization about the authoress: The Systems of Survival of 1992 and its last book, Dark Age Ahead of 2005. It intends to analyze possible contributions and perspectives present in the work of the authoress on the active role of the constructed means of the cities in the conformation of alternatives and ways of fighting for a life with a minimum of material dignity.

Para esta tarea se establece un diálogo con la obra de Jane Jacobs a partir de dos libros: La muerte y la vida de las grandes ciudades, cuya primera edición data de 1961, La economía de las ciudades publicada en 1969. Otros dos libros aparecen en el texto como elementos de corroboración de algo de contextualización sobre la autora: Los sistemas de supervivencia de 1992 y su último libro, Dark Age Ahead of 2005. Intenta analizar posibles contribuciones y perspectivas presentes en el trabajo de la autora sobre el papel activo de los medios construidos de las ciudades en la conformación de alternativas y formas de luchar por una vida con un mínimo de dignidad material.Este artigo pretende colocar em evidência a perspectiva teórica, analítica e ética sobre cidades contemporâneas contida na obra de Jane Jacobs. Particularmente no que se refere à relação entre meio construído das cidades e vitalidade urbana, com destaque para os aspectos político e econômico ligados ao meio construído. Para essa tarefa estabelece-se um diálogo com a obra de Jane Jacobs a partir de dois livros: Morte e Vida de Grandes Cidades cuja primeira edição data de 1961, The Economy of Cities publicado em 1969. Outros dois livros figuram no texto como elementos de corroboração de algumas contextualizações sobre a autora: The Systems of Survival de 1992 e seu último livro, Dark Age Ahead de 2005.
