Resumo: The municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes has 90.29% of the population residing in urban areas. In this context, urban gardens are interventions that mitigate some of the negative effects of this high rate of urbanization. The objective of this work was to characterize the community's urban vegetable gardens in the city and the profile of their horticulturists, in order to obtain data that allow the direction of public policies. Data were obtained from twelve community gardens registered at the city hall, through semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observation. The results indicate that the activity has a great impact on the income of urban farmers. Urban gardens are crucial for the maintenance of families linked to them and an important intervention that allows income generation for people in conditions of social vulnerability.

En este contexto, las huertas urbanas son intervenciones que permiten mitigar algunos de los efectos negativos de esta alta tasa de urbanización. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar las huertas urbanas comunitarias del municipio y el perfil de sus horticultores, de modo que se obtengan dados que permitan el direccionamiento de las políticas públicas. Los dados fueron obtenidos en doce huertas comunitarias inscritas en la alcaldía, por medio de entrevistas semi estructuradas y observación no participativa. Los resultados indican que esta actividad tiene gran impacto sobre sus ingresos. Siendo las huertas determinantes para la manutención de las familias vinculadas a estas, y una importante intervención que permite la generación de ingresos para las personas en condiciones de vulnerabilidad social.O município de Campos dos Goytacazes possui 90,29% da população residente em áreas urbanas. Nesse contexto, as hortas urbanas são intervenções que permitem mitigar alguns dos efeitos negativos dessa alta taxa de urbanização. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar as hortas urbanas comunitárias do município e o perfil de seus horticultores, de modo a se obter dados que permitam o direcionamento das políticas públicas. Os dados foram obtidos em doze hortas comunitárias inscritas na prefeitura, por meio entrevistas semiestruturadas e observação não participativa. Os resultados indicam que a atividade tem grande impacto sobre a renda dos agricultores urbanos.
