The production of meaning through multimodal metaphors on the covers of magazines that deal with politics in Brazil

Resumo: Our existence, as social beings, is marked by language as a tool for the production of meaning that, uninterruptedly, is manifested in social relationships. Thus, we pronounce the world in different ways and ways that gain materiality through texts. In this sense, this work is based on the socio-semiotic perspective of language (KRESS, 2010) and seeks to discuss the notion of texture as a semiotic resource (DJONOV; VAN LEEUWEN, 2011) for the production of multimodal metaphors, considering the qualities and potentialities of tactile textures and visuals of the reader’s embodied sensations (GAIARSA, 2021). Our reflections point to the analysis of Brazilian magazine covers that deal with politics in the period of president Dilma’s impeachment to the 2018 presidential elections, seeking to understand how they are constituted, which qualities and potential aspects of meaning of tactile and visual textures are used for the production of multimodal metaphors. Results show that in addition to communicating with their audience – privileged Brazilian social class – the covers reflect the habit of these elite groups to stigmatize popular classes from the grotesque deformation of their political representatives through texture representation resources.

Assim, pronunciamos o mundo de diversas formas e modos que ganham materialidade por meio de textos. Nesse sentido, este trabalho apoia-se na perspectiva sociossemiótica da linguagem (KRESS, 2010) e busca discutir a noção de textura como recurso semiótico (DJONOV; VAN LEEUWEN, 2011) para a produção de metáforas multimodais, considerando as qualidades e potencialidades das texturas táteis e visuais das sensações corporificadas do leitor (GAIARSA, 2021). Nossas reflexões acenam para análise de capas de revistas brasileiras que versam sobre política no período do impeachment da presidente Dilma até as eleições presidenciais de 2018, buscando compreender como elas se constituem, quais qualidades e aspectos potenciais de significação de texturas táteis e visuais são utilizadas para produção de metáforas multimodais.
