Toponymic lexicon: some points of linguistic-cultural intersections in alagoana municipal toponymy

The toponyms are common lexical units that update to individual proper names, redefined in the act of baptism of place. In these cases, there is a singular situation, by virtue of the word, when leaving its full use in the language, transiting to the onomastic-toponymic use, it has a denominational character and is referred to as locative. In this direction, this article aims to perform a linguistic description on the lexical choices arising from taxonomies of a physical nature registered, in the current synchrony, in the Alagoas toponymic lexicon carried out by the subject-appointee to nominate municipalities. As for the methods employed, this is a bibliographical study, in which the toponymic inventory that compose the corpus of this research followed fundamentally the theoretical-methodological principles of Lexicology and Toponymy, especially the theoretical model of Dick (1990, 1992) and the contributions of Isquerdo (1996, 2012). After the analysis, the results showed that there is a greater influence of motivating behaviors of a physical nature in the municipality toponymy. Within this motivational group, the taxes of hydrotoponym were the most productive, with records of 19 occurrences, of a total of 55 toponyms, which shows that natural habitat factors interfere in the choice of proper names attributed to the municipalities.
