Considerations on the variable realization of nominal agreement in Bacabal-MA

Based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2006 [1968]; LABOV, 2008[1972]; SCHERRE, 1988; OUSHIRO, 2015; TEIXEIRA, 2017), this paper proposed to investigate the linguistic and social factors that correlate to perform of nominal number agreement in simple Nominal Phrases, such as the ministerØ “os ministro” and the ministers “os ministros”, in Portuguese spoken in Bacabal, Maranhão. Twelve sociolinguistic interviews conducted with speakers from that city were analyzed, stratified according to their sex, age and level of education. The noun phrases were analyzed from an atomistic perspective, which considers each element of the noun phrase as analysis data separately (the / ministerØ). The results of the logistic regression analysis, carried out in the R program (R CORE TEAM, 2019), show that the level of education and age of the speakers are the social factors that correlate to the variable on screen. Regarding linguistic variables, only the nuclear element tonicity variable was not significant.
