Resumo: At least in the schools of the Brazilian state of Acre, the word pagela means ‘attendance list’ or the act of ‘taking attendance’. In its original Latin meaning, however, pagella is a ‘small page’. This article attempts to describe this word’s journey until it reached the schools of northern Brazil and gained its current meaning. It will also attempt to explain why pagela never became widespread in Brazil; actually, the meaning has only been residually retained. Pagela appeared in the dictionaries of Portuguese language in the late sixteenth century, meaning ‘installment’ or ‘tranche’. Examining the available evidence, the aim of this paper is to present a few etymological and historical hypotheses as to how pagela came to acquire its specific meaning in a school context. It is argued that much has to do with the activities of the Catholic Church, envisaged both as an institution and as manager of the Brazilian schooling system, which developed intense missionary and schooling activities in the Amazon region.

Universidade Federal do CearáCNPqMódolo, MarceloFurtado, Joaci PereiraViaro, Mário Eduardo2022-10-01info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttp://www.entrepalavras.ufc.br/revista/index.php/Revista/article/view/247910.22168/2237-6321-22479Entrepalavras; v. 12, n. 2 (12); 38-56Entrepalavras; v. 12, n. 2 (12); 38-56Entrepalavras; v. 12, n. 2 (12); 38-56Entrepalavras; v. 12, n. 2 (12); 38-56Entrepalavras; v. 12, n. 2 (12); 38-562237-6321reponame:Entrepalavrasinstname:Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC)instacron:UFCporhttp://www.entrepalavras.ufc.br/revista/index.php/Revista/article/view/2479/908Direitos autorais 2022 Entrepalavrashttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/deed.esinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2023-02-16T18:43:13Zoai:ojs.localhost:article/2479Revistahttp://www.entrepalavras.ufc.br/revista/index.php/Revista/indexPUBhttp://www.entrepalavras.ufc.br/revista/index.php/Revista/oaiwebmaster@entrepalavras.ufc.br||editor@entrepalavras.ufc.br2237-63212237-6321opendoar:2023-02-16T18:43:13Entrepalavras - Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC)false
