Resumo: Based in the literature that examine the importance of environmental performance indicators in support of organizational management, this study aimed to identify relations among the characteristics of organization and characteristics of managers in attribution of levels of importance and use of environmental performance indicators, in account their views on sustainable issues. To achieve objective, data collection was used through a questionnaire structured in universe of 600 companies in Federation of Industries in the states of Paraiba, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte, obtaining a rate of return of approximately 42 companies. The characteristics of companies, ISO 14000 certification, environmental strategies, organizational structure and size and characteristics of manager, professional experience, education and training were analyzed. As analysis techniques, descriptive statistics were used to identify the managers' conception of importance and use of indicators and a mean test between the groups of characteristics of organization and managers and their relations with importance attributed to indicators. This study concluded that companies to assign great importance to purpose of environmental indicators, with emphasis on control of waste disposal in water and solid waste exits. According to characteristics, the size and active environmental strategies were significant as to importance attributed to purpose of the indicators. Regarding the characteristics of managers, there was no significant influence, allowing to infer that regardless of experience, education and training, environmental issues are considered as important within the management of organizations.

Para atingir tal objetivo, utilizou-se a coleta de dados através de um questionário estruturado em um universo de 600 empresas que possuem cadastro na Federação das Indústrias nos estados da Paraíba, Pernambuco e Rio Grande do Norte, sendo obtida uma taxa de retorno de aproximadamente 42 empresas. Foram analisadas as características da empresa, certificação ISO 14000, estratégias ambientais, estrutura organizacional e tamanho e as características do gestor, experiência profissional, escolaridade e formação. Como técnicas de análise, foi considerada a estatística descritiva para identificar a concepção dos gestores quanto à importância e utilidade dos indicadores e um teste de média entre os grupos das características da organização e dos gestores e suas relações com a importância atribuída aos indicadores. Conclui-se que as empresas atribuem grande importância a finalidade dos indicadores ambientais, com ênfase no controle da saída de lixos nas águas e saídas de resíduos sólidos. Conforme as características, o tamanho e as estratégias ambientais ativas foram significativos quanto à importância atribuída à finalidade dos indicadores.
