Resumo: Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar os aspectos estruturais da comunidade arbustiva e arbórea em uma área de Caatinga no Cariri Ocidental da Paraíba. O trabalho de campo foi realizado em uma área rural do município de Monteiro, situado na microrregião do Cariri Ocidental, a uma altitude de 590 m. O estudo fitossociológico foi realizado adotando-se o método de parcelas contíguas em uma área de 0,2 ha subdividido em parcelas de 10 x 10 m. Foram amostrados 803 indivíduos, pertencentes a 28 espécies. A densidade total foi de 4.015 indivíduos.ha-1 e área basal total de 20,24 m2. As espécies que se destacaram com os mais elevados valores de importância (VI) estão a seguir listadas em ordem decrescente: Poincianella pyramidalis (Tul.) L.P. Queiroz, Croton blanchetianus Baill., Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan e Croton echioides Baill. Portanto, os dados direcionam para a importância dos estudos de ecologia de comunidades para o fortalecimento do uso sustentável dos recursos vegetais na região Semiárida brasileira.

The research was conducted in the countryside of the municipality of Monteiro, located in the microregion of Western Cariri, at an altitude of 590 m. The phytosociological study was conducted by adopting the method of contiguous parcels in an area of 0.2 ha divided into plots of 10 x 10 m. 803 individuals belonging to 28 species were sampled. The total density of 4,015 individual.ha-1 and total basal area of 20.24 m2. The species that stood out with the highest importance values (VI) are listed below in descending order: Poincianella pyramidalis (Tul.) L.P.
