Resumo: Este trabalho tem por objetivo discutir a importância da cultura na formação identitária da juventude, destacando a necessidade de sua efetivação enquanto política pública voltada para este segmento. Sendo este trabalho parte de um projeto de pesquisa (ainda em andamento) — intitulado “Pastoral da Juventude do Meio Popular: cidadania em pauta”, do mestrado em Educação Popular, da UFPB, na linha de Movimentos Sociais — que se propõe trabalhar com a juventude mais pobre, numa perspectiva emancipadora, o enfoque recairá, principalmente, sobre essa juventude, considerando-se a educação popular como um instrumento necessário à sua libertação. Partindo de uma abordagem qualitativa, no primeiro momento refletiremos sobre alguns olhares referentes à categoria juventude; depois, traremos à reflexão a relação cultura e identidade, e sua importância na formação identitária da juventude; e, por fim, discutiremos sobre a necessidade de políticas públicas de juventude, especialmente no campo da cultura, e a participação dessa juventude nesse processo. Como a pesquisa ainda está em andamento, serão apresentadas as impressões iniciais sobre os estudos ora realizados, incluindo-se aí uma breve revisão bibliográfica e alguns resultados parciais.
