Cooperative credit: a case study for the regions North and Northeast of Brazil

Resumo: This work consists of a pioneering study on the mechanisms of decision taking in credit cooperatives, institutions with high growth rate in the Brazilian financial system, whose direct operations generate a management trade-off regarding the problem of incentives and monitoring. In this context, some descriptive analyses are performed regarding the optimizing behavior of the northeastern and northern economy cooperatives and mutual credit, vis-Ã-vis the simulation performed in Banerjee, Besley and Guinnane (1994). The main evidences suggest that due to the economic instability, the empirical success for the German cooperatives is not observed in the Brazilian case.
