The article deals with the transition from one-party rule to democracy in Africa, especially in Guinea-Bissau. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze and understand the process of transition from the one-party regime to democracy in the country. It is understood that the country adhered to democracy without having prepared itself beforehand, since it was facing economic crises and needed financial help and that was one of the reasons for its adherence. For the elaboration of this article, we adopted in the research methodology the bibliographic review, which is the process that allows us to collect and analyze the information obtained in the literature to use in the work. On the other hand, democracy is facing several obstacles in West Africa and particularly in Guinea-Bissau in recent years and one of the biggest challenges for political parties today is the fulfillment of democratic rules that allow for the existence of transparent, fair and free rights based on the commitment to the popular interest. Finally, we realize that access to power is relevant through the democratic route in elections and not through the use of force, which causes violence, physical aggression, deaths, etc.
