Resumo: Caesalpinia echinata Lam. is native specie from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and is on extinction risk. The informations about the ecophysiological and the successional stage of this specie are contradictory, what dificult its management and conservation. The ecophysiological behavior of young plants of brazilwood affected by light was evaluated through the growth analysis and morphophysiological responses. One-year-old plants were cultivaded under 0%, 50%, 80% artificial shading and natural shading for a period of 392 days, and growth parameters were measured. Higher leaf area, dry mass and relative growth rate were obtained under moderate shade (50%). Under full sunlight the plants showing higher ratio root/shoot and specific leaf mass. Growth was inhibited under 80% artificial shading and natural shade. Plants cultivated under 50% shading were transferred to full sunlight, and at 0, 3, 24, 48 and 192 hours, were measured gas exchange and the potential maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (FV/FM). Plants leaflets presented burning and abscission, inhibition of net photosynthesis (A) and reduction of FV/FM. Thus, 50% shading presented as ideal lighting conditions for the development of brazilwood young plants. Subsequently, one-year-old plants cultivated under 50% shading were subjected to direct sunlight. At 0, 2, 4, 7, 14, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 120 and 180 days were analyzed leaf morphophysiology. Plants transferred to the sunligth showing leaflets abscission after 2 days, and issued new leaves up to 14 days. There was significant increase in specific leaf mass and water content, increasing blade thickness, cuticle, adaxial epidermis and palisade parenchyma. There was reduction in the chlorophyll a/b and chlorophyll/carotenoids ratios. The soluble carbohydrates levels, especially sucrose, increased with plant exposure to full sunlight during 7- 60 days. Glucose and fructose showed higher level at 7 days. Morphoanatomical changes, in the pigments and carbohydrates levels indicate morphophysiological plasticity. However, there was significant reduction of FV/FM, effective maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (FV/F0) and performance index (P.I.) to 14 days. There were observed values below the control until 180 days. Thus, it was observed that full sunlight exposure decreases the plants photochemical efficiency, indicating that C. echinata is not pioneer-sucession species. Growth was inhibited under intense shading, not characterizing the climax specie. Thus, brazilwood has the characteristics of intermediate specie. Although they presented photoinhibition, the young plants have plasticity and capacity of tolerance to high-light stress

As informações quanto à ecofisiologia e ao estágio sucessional desta espécie são contraditórias, o que dificulta o seu manejo e conservação. Objetivou-se analisar o comportamento ecofisiológico de plantas jovens de pau-brasil em relação à luminosidade, por meio da análise de crescimento e das respostas morfofisiológicas. Plantas com um ano de idade foram cultivadas em 0%, 50%, 80% de sombreamento e em sombreamento natural durante 392 dias, e realizadas medidas de crescimento. Em sombreamento moderado (50%) foram obtidas maiores área foliar, massa seca e taxa de crescimento relativo. Em pleno sol as plantas apresentaram maior razão raiz/parte aérea e maior massa foliar específica. O crescimento foi inibido em 80% de sombreamento artificial, e em sombreamento natural. As plantas cultivadas em 50% de sombreamento foram transferidas para pleno sol. No momento da transferência (0 hora), às 3, 24, 48 e 192 horas, foram realizadas medidas das trocas gasosas e da eficiência quântica máxima potencial do fotossistema II (FSII) (FV/FM). As plantas apresentaram queimadura e abscisão dos foliólulos, inibição da assimilação fotossintética de CO2 (A) e redução da FV/FM. Assim, o sombreamento de 50% apresentou-se como condição ideal de luminosidade para o desenvolvimento das plantas jovens de pau-brasil. Posteriormente, plantas com um ano de idade cultivadas em 50% de sombreamento foram submetidas à radiação solar direta. Aos 0, 2, 4, 7, 14, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 120 e 180 dias, foi analisada a morfofisiologia foliar. Observou-se abscisão dos foliólulos das plantas transferidas para o sol a partir dos 2 dias, sendo emitidas novas folhas até os 14 dias. Verificou-se aumento expressivo da massa foliar específica e do teor de água, aumento da espessura do limbo, da cutícula, da epiderme da face adaxial, e do parênquima paliçádico. Houve redução das razões clorofila a/b e clorofila/carotenóides. Os teores de carboidratos solúveis, em especial da sacarose, aumentaram com a exposição das plantas ao pleno sol no período entre 7 e 60 dias. Glicose e frutose apresentam elevados valores aos 7 dias. Alterações na morfoanatomia e nas concentrações de pigmentos e de carboidratos indicam plasticidade morfofisiológica. No entanto, verificou-se redução expressiva de FV/FM, da eficiência quântica efetiva do FSII (FV/F0) e do índice de desempenho (P.I.) até os 14 dias, sendo observado valores abaixo do controle até o final do periodo de análise. Assim, evidenciou-se que a exposição das plantas ao pleno sol levou a redução da eficiência fotoquímica da fotossíntese, indicando que C. echinata não pode ser considerada uma espécie pioneira. Seu crescimento foi prejudicado em sombreamento intenso, o que não a caracteriza como espécie clímax. Sendo assim, pau-brasil apresenta características de espécie intermediária. Embora tenham apresentado fotoinibição, as plantas jovens possuem plasticidade e capacidade de tolerância ao estresse por elevada irradiância.TextMENGARDA, Liana Hilda Golin.
