Resumo: This article aims to characterize the use of Information Technology (IT) for the business management of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in the artistic and decoration ceramics sector, located in a municipality in the state of São Paulo. This is exploratory-descriptive research, applied, with a qualitative approach, developed through field research, supported by bibliographic research. The field survey was carried out through the application of questionnaires and interviews with businessmen and through statements made by agents with knowledge of the sector. As a result, it was possible to identify a low level of use of IT resources for business management: SMEs, when using them, do not do it strategically. The difficulties faced: in the delimitation of the research universe, composed of artistic and decoration ceramic companies, in a municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo and in the identification of SMEs present in this universe, they provided additional results, of a methodological character, related to strategies for listing location and access to MSEs.

Trata-se de pesquisa exploratória-descritiva, aplicada, com abordagem qualitativa, desenvolvida por meio de uma pesquisa de campo, apoiada em pesquisa bibliográfica. O levantamento de campo foi realizado por meio de questionário e entrevistas com empresários e de depoimentos de agentes conhecedores do setor. Como resultado, pôde-se identificar baixo nível de utilização dos recursos de TI para a gestão empresarial: as MPEs, quando os utilizam, não o fazem estrategicamente.
