THE COSMOS IN WARP AND WEFT: THE CRUX CONSTELLATION AND ITS PROPORTIONS IN ANDEAN TEXTILES

Resumo: | This paper reflects on the dialogue between pre-Hispanic textile pieces from the collection of the Museo de Arte Precolombino e Indígena - MAPI, Uruguay, with other pieces of my own making, in the context of the exhibition “illariykuna, resplendent textiles”. The long-standing relationship between Andean textiles and observations of the Crux constellation is explored and how these may have influenced the development of textile techniques and one of the proportional systems used by the Andean culture. It is concluded that this search has not lost validity; on the contrary, it intensifies with experimentation with other technologies. The knowledge captured in textiles does not expire, because in them we can still observe the movement of the cosmos. |

Se explora la relación de larga data entre los tejidos andinos y las observaciones de la constelación Crux y cómo estas pueden haber influido en el desarrollo de técnicas textiles y de uno de los sistemas de proporciones utilizados por la cultura Andina. Se concluye que esta búsqueda no ha perdido vigencia; al contrario, se intensifica con la experimentación con otras tecnologías. El conocimiento plasmado en los textiles no caduca, pues en ellos todavía podemos observar el movimiento del cosmos.Em este texto reflete-se sobre o diálogo entre têxteis préhispânicos do acervo do Museo de Arte Precolombino e Indígena - MAPI, Uruguai, e peças de minha própria confecção, no contexto da exposição “illariykuna, tecidos resplandecentes”. São exploradas a relação de longa data entre os têxteis andinos e as observações da constelação Crux, e a maneira como estas podem ter influenciado o desenvolvimento das técnicas têxteis e de um dos sistemas de proporções utilizados pela cultura andina. Conclui-se que esta busca não perdeu validade; pelo contrário, intensifica-se com a experimentação junto com outras tecnologias.
