The edge of the pool: an analysis of the film "The second mother" in dialogue with the imaginary about Brazilian social inequality

Resumo: In this paper we carry out an analysis of the feature film The second mother (MUYLAERT, 2015) with an emphasis on the figure of the pool and its symbolism in the narrative of the movie through the theoretical framework of authors linked to the study of image and art. We take as a starting point the understanding of cinema as a documentary registry of its time which allows us to reflect on the world it portrays in a historical perspective. From this initial paradigm driven by Kracauer's theory (1960) and from previous thoughts by Schopenhauer (2014), we draw parallels between the figure of the pool present in the film and the concept of dialectical image — derived from the reading of Didi-Huberman (1998) — given the bond between the characters and their social and political context in the Brazilian imaginary.

A partir de este paradigma inicial impulsado por la teoría de Kracauer (1960) y por reflexiones previas de Schopenhauer (2014), trazamos paralelismos entre la figura de la piscina presente en la película y el concepto de imagen dialéctica — derivado de la lectura de Didi-Huberman (1998) — dada la trama de relaciones entre los personajes y su contexto político y social en la realidad brasileña y en su imaginario.Neste trabalho realizamos uma análise do filme Que horas ela volta? (MUYLAERT, 2015) com ênfase na figura da piscina e em sua simbologia na narrativa da obra, por meio do referencial teórico de autores vinculados ao estudo da imagem e da arte. Tomamos como ponto de partida a compreensão do cinema como um registro documental de seu tempo, que nos permite refletir sobre o mundo que retrata em uma perspectiva histórica.
