This article presents the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data from a survey carried out between 2016 and 2018, on the perceptions of women living in the Maré favelas, in Rio de Janeiro, regarding gender-based violence, its manifestations and ways of mediation in the territory. Considering the fact that black and mixed race women are more likely to be affected by gender-based violence, the research findings revealed that the types of violence and the places where it manifests itself are the result of economic and relational conditions, generally in the domestic/family environment and having as their main aggressors, people known or who live with the victim. However, the incidence of violence, with structural roots, are also related to the absence of policies within the State or to the action of armed groups active in the territory, such as Maré, which reinforce social inequalities, in their multiple manifestations, related to urban violence as well.
