ANALYSIS OF THE DESIGN OF FEDERAL BIOLOGICAL RESERVES AS AN INDICATOR FOR BUFFER ZONES

Resumo: | Protected Areas are the most effective nature conservation strategy ever employed. In the planning stage of the conservation system, factors such as proximity to fragments and shape are extremely important, as they express external pressure that the fragment receives and what can be done to shrink it. One of the principles of Conservation Biology is that more regular fragment forms tend to receive less with external pressures. In this sense, landscape metrics are relevant to determine the complexity of the shape, edge effect and, consequently, the quality of the fragment. Thus, on the design of reserves, the work had the purpose of evaluating the federal Biological Reserves regarding the format, using landscape metrics programs to achieve results. The tools Patch Analyst and Fragstats were used for the shape calculations. The results showed that some federals Biological Reserves have worrying formats, which indicates unpleasant consequences for the conservation of species and great dependence on the quality of the surroundings. Using landscape metrics to assess the format of Conservation Units should be improved, in order to unfold discussions of the implications of the shape on the species present there. |

En la etapa de planificación del sistema de conservación, factores como la proximidad de los fragmentos y la forma son extremadamente importantes, porque expresan la presión externa que recibe el fragmento y lo que se puede hacer para disminuirla. Uno de los principios de la biología de la conservación es que las formas de fragmentos más regulares tienden a recibir menos de las presiones externas. En este sentido, las métricas de paisaje son pertinentes para determinar la complejidad de la forma, efecto de borde y, en consecuencia, la calidad del fragmento. Así, en cuanto al diseño de reservas, el propósito del estudio fue evaluar las Reservas Biológicas federales en términos de formato, utilizando programas de métricas de paisaje para obtener los resultados. Se utilizaron las herramientas de Patch Analyst y Fragstats para el cálculo de formas. Los resultados mostraron que algunas Reservas Biológicas federales tienen formas preocupantes, esto indica consecuencias desagradables en la conservación de las especies y una gran dependencia de la calidad del medio ambiente. Utilizar métricas de paisaje para evaluar el formato de las Unidades de Conservación debe mejorarse, con el fin de desarrollar discusiones sobre las implicaciones de la forma en las especies presentes allí.As Áreas Protegidas são a estratégia de conservação da natureza mais efetiva até então empregada. Na etapa de planejamento do sistema de conservação, fatores como proximidade de fragmentos e forma são de extrema importância, pois expressam a pressão externa que o fragmento recebe e o que pode ser feito para diminuí-la. Um dos princípios da Biologia da Conservação é que formas de fragmentos mais regulares tendem a receber menos com pressões externas. Nesse sentido, as métricas de paisagem se mostram pertinentes para determinar a complexidade da forma, efeito de borda e, consequentemente, a qualidade do fragmento. Desta forma, sobre o desenho de reservas, o trabalho teve o propósito de avaliar as Reservas Biológicas federais quanto ao formato, utilizando de programas de métricas de paisagem para obtenção dos resultados. Foram utilizadas as ferramentas Patch Analyst e o Fragstats para os cálculos de forma. Os resultados demonstraram que algumas Reservas Biológicas federais possuem formatos preocupantes, o que indica consequências desagradáveis na conservação de espécies e grande dependência com a qualidade do entorno.
