VEGETATION COVER IN THE CITY CENTER OF THE BRAZILIAN CAPITALS

Resumo: Several Brazilian state capitals have an environmental title: “the greenest capital”, “most sustainable capital” or “most wooded capital” of Brazil or of the world. Few of these titles, however, were preceded by studies that explained the conceptualization and methodology used to reach such a result. To address this gap, this study aimed to establish a ranking between Brazilian state and district capitals based on vegetation cover. In order to do that, we used satellite images of the Google Earth software and edited the vegetation cover polygons of all 27 Brazilian capitals in ArcGIS 10.2.2 software. Due to the time determined for the research, we decided to map only the central areas of the capitals, within a radius of 500m around some landmarks commonly located in the center of cities, such as Mother Church, City Hall and the zero milestone marker. Completed the mapping stage and established the ranking, Brasília (DF) reached the first position, with 31,83% of vegetation cover in the mapped area, and Aracaju (SE) was the last one, with 6,38% of vegetation cover in its central area. However, our findings showed that this could not be considered as a fair ranking due to the difficulty of locating the capital center with precision. Besides, there was a lot of divergence in the satellite images available for each city, as they presented very different dates, resolutions and image quality incompatible with the intended comparison. In addition, state and district capitals have very different physical, historical and socioeconomic conditions, which also makes the comparison among them unfair.

Pocos de estos títulos, sin embargo, fueron precedidos de estudios que explicasen la conceptualización y metodología empleadas para llegar a tal resultado. En vista de esta laguna, este trabajo tuvo como objetivo establecer un ranking entre capitales de los estados y distritos brasileños con base en la cobertura vegetal. Se utilizaron imágenes satelitales del software Google Earth y los polígonos de cobertura vegetal de las 27 capitales fueron editados en el software ArcGIS 10.2.2. Debido al tiempo determinado para la investigación, se optó por mapear sólo las áreas centrales de las capitales, en un radio de 500m en torno a algunos puntos de referencia comúnmente encontrados en el centro de las ciudades, como Iglesia Matriz, sede del Ayuntamiento y Marco Cero. Brasilia (DF) alcanzó la primera posición, con 31,83% de cobertura vegetal en el área mapeada, y Aracaju (SE) quedó en último lugar, con un 6,38% de cobertura vegetal en su área central. Sin embargo, se constató que no se trató de un ranking justo, en función de la dificultad de localizar con precisión el centro de las capitales, además de haber habido mucha divergencia en las imágenes de satélite disponibles para cada capital, con fechas muy diferentes y resoluciones y calidad de las imágenes incompatibles con la comparación que se pretendía hacer. Además, las capitales de los estados y distritos presentan condiciones físicas, históricas y socioeconómicas muy diversas entre sí, lo que también hace injusta la comparación entre ellasVárias capitais estaduais brasileiras possuem um título de cunho ambiental: “capital mais verde”, “capital mais sustentável” ou “capital mais arborizada” do Brasil ou do mundo. Poucos desses títulos, no entanto, foram precedidos de estudos que explicassem a conceituação e a metodologia empregadas para se chegar a tal resultado. Tendo em vista essa lacuna, este trabalho teve como objetivo estabelecer um ranking entre capitais estaduais e distrital brasileiras com base na cobertura vegetal. Foram utilizadas imagens de satélite do software Google Earth e os polígonos de cobertura vegetal de todas as 27 capitais foram editados no software ArcGIS 10.2.2. Devido ao tempo determinado para a pesquisa, optou-se por mapear apenas as áreas centrais das capitais, em um raio de 500m em torno de alguns pontos de referência comumente encontrados no centro das cidades, como Igreja Matriz, sede da Prefeitura e Marco Zero. Brasília (DF) alcançou a primeira posição, com 31,83% de cobertura vegetal na área mapeada, e Aracaju (SE) ficou em último lugar, com 6,38% de cobertura vegetal em sua área central. Entretanto, constatou-se que não se tratou de um ranking válido, em função da dificuldade de localizar com precisão o centro das capitais, além de ter havido muita divergência nas imagens de satélite disponíveis para cada capital, com datas muito diferentes e resoluções e qualidade das imagens incompatíveis com a comparação que se pretendia fazer.
