Resumo: The mountainous environments of the semiarid region of Brazil are, for the most part, shown as environments of conserved vegetation cover or in an advanced ecological succession stage, which gives them greater floristic and structural diversity. Given the context of phytogeographic complexity in which these environments are associated, this research aimed to classify the phytoecological units of the João do Vale mountain range (RN/PB). The classification of land uses and land cover was carried out with the aid of the Ecognition Developer software (Trimble®), as well as with the primary data collection in situ, in which the key species that characterize each phytoecological unit were noted and the distribution patterns were described vegetation cover. It was identified that the area has 02 predominant phytophysiognomies: caatinga and seasonally dry tropical forest. The phytosionomies found are conditioned by both environmental factors and human intervention, generating complex distribution patterns, sometimes with no trends, where randomness is prominent. 02 phytoecological units from the caatinga and 04 from the forest were identified, the latter being restricted to areas with less extension in the higher zones and surrounded by stretches of steep slope.
