THE GEOGRAPHY OF SUPERMARKET NETWORKS: considerations about the North of Minas Gerais

Resumo: In medium and small cities, the attraction of new economic enterprises linked to consumption, such as supermarkets, enhance the understanding of the production of urban space in contemporary times. It is important to analyze the locational decisions of these projects and the spatial transformations they entail. From this perspective, this article aims to reflect on the installation of supermarkets, members of networks recognized at the state or national level, in the North of Minas Gerais. For that, a methodology based on bibliographical analysis on the urban-regional dynamics and the locational strategy was used; secondary data search on supermarket chain websites; use of Google Earth to identify establishments and; elaboration of maps. As a result, it was found that when these supermarkets are installed in a given location, they seek to attract intra- and long-distance consumers, promoting greater connection between municipalities.

Es importante analizar las decisiones de ubicación de estos desarrollos y las transformaciones espaciales que conllevan. En esta perspectiva, este artículo tiene como objetivo reflexionar sobre la instalación de supermercados, integrantes de cadenas reconocidas a nivel estatal o nacional, en el Norte de Minas Gerais. Para ello, se utilizó una metodologia basada en el análisis bibliográfico sobre la dinámica urbano-regional y la estrategia de localización; investigación de datos secundários em sitios de cadenas de supermercados; uso de Google Earth para identificar establecimientos y; elaboración de mapas. Como resultado, se encontró que estos supermercados, cuando se instalan en una determinada ubicación, buscan atraer consumidores intra e interurbanos, promoviendo una mayor conexión entre los municipios.Nas cidades médias e pequenas a atração de novos empreendimentos econômicos ligados ao consumo, como os supermercados, potencializam a compreensão da produção do espaço urbano na contemporaneidade. Torna-se importante analisar as decisões locacionais desses empreendimentos e as transformações espaciais que eles acarretam. Nessa perspectiva, o presente artigo tem por objetivo refletir sobre a instalação de supermercados, integrantes de redes reconhecidas em nível estadual ou nacional, no Norte de Minas Gerais. Para tanto, utilizou-se uma metodologia baseada em análise bibliográfica sobre a dinâmica urbana-regional e a estratégia locacional; pesquisa de dados secundários em sites das redes de supermercados; uso do Google Earth para identificar os estabelecimentos e; elaboração de mapas.
