THE UNDERGROUND TERRITORIALIZATION IN THE METROPOLIS: a spatiotemporal analysis of the territories of Hip-Hop culture in Belo Horizonte between the years 1990-2009

Investigating Hip-Hop culture from the perspective of geographic science is an emerging theme and makes up a field of science called Marginal Geography, and, mainly, aims to achieve a visibility of this suburban culture in the academic and scientific debate. In this sense, this study’s main purpose is to understand the spatiotemporal evolution of Hip-Hop culture over two decades, from 1990 to 2009, in the city of Belo Horizonte. To achieve this, the methodology was based on the survey of secondary data and the creation of cartographies of underground territories in the capital of Minas Gerais. According to the results obtained in the research, it can be inferred that over space-time there were processes of territorialization, deterritorialization and reterritorialization of Hip-Hop territories, where there is a tendency for them to be established in both central and peripheral public spaces of the city, and, in addition, it is noted that there are private spaces that have the capacity to recognize and aggregate this culture with the underground cultural scene in Belo Horizonte.
