"Pequenos-gigantes" entre si: notas etnográficas acerca da capacidade e da disponibilidade dos bebês em viver socioculturalmente

Traditionally, babies have little visibility in the Humanities and Social sciences, specifically in the Education, Anthropology, and Sociology. The existing research with this age group has been developed predominantly, for decades, by Psychology, Psychoanalysis and Medicine - among other fields of Health Sciences. The analysis of such areas of knowledge eventually promote the view of babies as "biological babies": humans small in stature, driven by basic needs, helpless, selfish, immature and cognitively unable. The present research, inspired by the theory of Lev Vigotiski and contributions from other authors such as Daniel Stern and Michael Tomasello, seeks to deconstruct this hegemonic image of babies as "biological packages", highlighting the social, historical and cultural dimension of the human since its birth. To this end, I share here my ethnographic research, during the second semester of 2011 and the first semester of 2012, with ten babies (between 7-20 months old) in the Lisaura Machado Ruas Municipal Kindergarten Unit, located in the Morro da Cocada, Niterói - RJ. The analysis elucidates the surprising willingness and ability of babies to share their experiences and cultural learnings, not only with adults but also with their peers thus opposing the dominant view of the socio-cognitive disability of babies
