Resumo: The present study it approaches sustainable development and Environmental Accounting. It presents pertinent bibliographical revision about concepts of sustainable development and social responsibility, as well as innovations brought by Environmental Accounting associated to the definition of the environmental cost, the form of measure of environmental passives, and the use of explanative notes and pointers of environmental, standardized in the process information supply to the public. In this study it was analyzed the Social Report and the Annual Report of CVRD - Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, relative to 2004, specifically the investments carried through for the company in Environment, such operational, as external programs and projects. In the evaluation, has been recognized the importance of Environmental Accounting as an instrument of essential value to the companies and sustainable development, allowing to reach positive actions related to environment, and that these actions could be are accomplished with transparency

Apresenta revisão bibliográfica pertinente ao tema segundo a qual se estabelecem conceitos de desenvolvimento sustentável e responsabilidade social, bem como inovações trazidas pela Contabilidade Ambiental associadas às definição do custo ambiental, à forma de mensuração do passivo ambiental, e a utilização de notas explicativas abrangentes e o uso de indicadores de desempenho ambiental, padronizados no processo de fornecimento de informações ao público. Neste estudo foi analisado o Balanço Social e o Relatório Anual da CVRD Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, relativo ao ano de 2004, especificamente os investimentos realizados pela empresa em Meio Ambiente, tanto operacionais, quanto programas e projetos externos.
