In order to redefine the countryside, research was done on both past and ongoing changes and the processes that reveal these differences and the existence of several types of countryside. For the research on screen, done in Nova Friburgo, the peculiarities of two areas were analysed - one is Campo do Coelho and the other consisted of two districts: Lumiar and of São Pedro da Serra. These two latter districts are grouped together due to the proximity and similarities of both places. The urban aspects that are now present in these areas are considered a factor for transformation of these rural areas, which are able to change the social and cultural relationships and also of noticeably changing the economic reproduction. It was also noted that natural attributes of each area, suffering interference from public and private investment, cause transformations in the everyday lives of the inhabitants of these rural areas, which then cause changes in the landscape. In some cases, this has brought the appearance of new rural aspects in these areas. Some symbols of urbanization, such as outside investment in technology and information, are not readily recognized as agents of change within these areas. Because these two rural areas of Nova Friburgo are in the midst of a transformation process, the borders were defined considering non-consolidated state of these places. The new rural aspects are brought to life expressing the essence of the countryside and the expectations of their inhabitants for an improvement in their living conditions and future prospects through public and private investments, but without losing the rural characteristics.The goal of this research is to analyse the processes that cause the redefinition of the countryside, which appear under the influence of urban aspects, in the rural areas of Campo do Coelho, Lumiar and São Pedro da Serra. For such, it was essential to observe the relationships that develop from the urban aspects, and also to bring to this discussion the emergence of new rural characteristics from these processes.
