Resumo: This paper deals with the variable use of the verbs ‘ter’ and ‘haver’ regarding the data taken from the Linguistic Atlas of Brazil – AliB, including Alagoas, Ceará and Piauí (MOTA; CARDODO, 2009; CARDOSO; MOTA, 2012). Its conclusions are based on theoretical and methodological assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics (LABOV, [1972] 2008; WEINREICH et al., [1968] 2006). In this purpose, the authors analyze the speech of 84 informants, distributed into 21 municipalities of the three States mentioned above. The variables gender, age, location, type of questionnaire and verbal form were controlled. The data were submitted to the Goldvarb X program with the following results: the verb ‘ter’ obtained total occurrences higher than 96%, allied to the age group I and the present tense, whereas for ‘haver’ the age group II and the past tense were the protagonists, presenting a tendency for a changing process from ‘ter’ to ‘haver’.
