The comparative structure: a syntactic study from a functional perspective

The purpose of this study is to provide a syntactic characterization of the comparative structure. The perspective chosen is based on the theoretical aspects advocated by A. Martinet (1978, 1979, 1985, 1985b), E. Alarcos (1982, 1996), C. Hérnandez (1984, 1995) and S. Gutiérrez (1994, 1997a, 1997b). Since this is a syntactic study, it is necessary to determine the criteria for analysing the behaviour of such linguistic units and, at the same time, to verify which functional places they can occupy. A literature review is conducted to determine how grammars, both of Portuguese and Castilian, consider comparative structure (Ali (1964), Cunha and Cintra (1987), Vilela (1995), Mateus (1989), Raposo (2013), C. Hernández (1984), Alarcos (1996)). The linguistic perspective has been provided by Narbona (1979, 1989), Fonseca (1993 and 1994) and Gutiérrez (1994, 1997a). Our intention is to show that comparative structure is not exclusively mediated by phrase, i.e., structure as an alternative concept. It was considered important to identify the formal components and to highlight the determining relations, which was achieved through the syntactic analysis of a selected sample of structures.
