Resumo: Whether capixabas - those born in Espírito Santo - have an accent or not is the subject of much debate in Espírito Santo. This paper aims to (a) derive from the specific literature on the third variationist wave (including ECKERT, 2012; 2018) a resigned conception of perception and evaluation, and (b) shed light on how the question of sociolinguistic identity in Espírito Santo can be reinterpreted in the context of this new phase. Methodologically, this is a qualitative study in which data are obtained through a literature review and a public survey. The results point to the new variant phase: (a) the abandonment of the concept of linguistic consciousness/ unconsciousness; (b) the elimination of the difference between evaluation and perception; and (c) the redefinition of the concept of identity, considering it as an interactional performance consciously claimed by subjects. The results also point to a pluridiscursive scenario on the linguistic identity of Espírito Santo, which leads us to conclude that the people from Espírito Santo paradoxically have an accent and do not have one.
