Letters by poor writers from Bahia (20th Century): description of relative sentences syntax

This paper described and analysed the relative sentences in 91 personal letters written from 1906 to 2000 by semi-literate sertanejos from the backlands of Bahia, edited by Santiago (2012), who defines them as having unskilled hands (MARQUILHAS, 2000). Based on the socio-historical perspective of Historical Linguistics (MATTOS E SILVA, 2008) and the Labovian Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 1972), the analysis of the collected data concluded that the relativization strategies employed by these writers are close to popular variants of Brazilian Portuguese (TARALLO, 1983; 1993). Moreover, in view of the studies on written language acquisition, it was observed that such processes are common among adult individuals in a phase of written language acquisition, as is the case with children (LESSA DE OLIVEIRA, 2008).
