The contribution of Félix F. Outes to the study of the Fuegopatagonian languages

Félix Faustino Outes (1878-1939) was a specialist in anthropological sciences who, in addition to various archeological and geographical topics, was also involved in the study of the indigenous languages of what is now Argentina. Continuing a previous work (DOMÍNGUEZ, L. 2022), this time we will examine, from the perspective of linguistic historiography, his contributions to the study of the indigenous languages of the Fuegopatagon, to which we also add a work on the languages of the River Plate from his pen. All these contributions were based on documentary sources due to occasional results or their own academic contacts. The first series that we will analyze consists of works based on the discovery, in 1910, of a set of codices in the British Museum that allowed him to rectify classifying hypotheses of Río de la Plata and Patagonian languages. The second series is based on a group of materials that were given to him by a Swiss traveler, Georges Claraz, in the 1920s, among which a Yagan and a “Pehuenche” vocabulary stand out.
