Resumo: | The aim of this article is to describe and analyze the occurrence of (im)politeness and face-saving strategies in a plenary session of the Brazilian Supreme Court of Justice (STF), in the interaction between Justices Gilmar Mendes and Luís Roberto Barroso. Methodologically, it is a qualitative work that applies the method of conversation analysis with a descriptive and interpretative approach. It is based on assumptions from the theories of politeness, including authors such as Brown and Levinson (1987), Goffman (1978) and Culpeper (2011). The data analysis shows that in formal public spaces such as the plenary session of the highest court in the land, a place that requires a certain linguistic and behavioral rigor typical of the legal sphere, interactions rely heavily on strategies of (im)politeness and face-saving. As it is a place of conflict resolution, discourse does not always conform to the expected impersonality, clarity, conciseness, formality and uniformity. |
