Resumo: This paper focuses on the 16th Century fantastic descriptions of animais from Brazil and Latin America, which were collected by Afonso d'Escragnolle Taunay in the books Zoologia Fantástica do Brasil and Monstros e Monstrengos do Brasil, articulating them to some contemporary bestiaries of Latin American writers and artists, such as Francisco de Toledo and Wilson Bueno. One of its aims is to discuss, through this articulation, the hybrid, "deformed", and "monstruous" character of the so called Latin American identity, as well as to investigate the cultural implications of that kind of fantastical zoology in the construction of a fictional concept of Latin America.

Pretende-se, com tal articulação, discutir o caráter híbrido, inclassificável e "monstruoso" da chamada identidade latino-americana, bem como avaliar as implicações culturais da zoologia fantástica na construção de um conceito ficcional de América Latina.Universidade Federal Fluminense2001-06-30info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.uff.br/gragoata/article/view/49020Gragoatá; Vol. 6 No. 10 (2001): Gragoatá 10; 89-96Gragoatá; v. 6 n. 10 (2001): Gragoatá 10; 89-962358-41141413-9073reponame:Gragoatáinstname:Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF)instacron:UFFporhttps://periodicos.uff.br/gragoata/article/view/49020/28527Copyright (c) 2021 Gragoatáinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessMaciel, Maria Esther2021-03-07T04:55:09Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/49020Revistahttps://periodicos.uff.br/gragoataPUBhttps://periodicos.uff.br/gragoata/oai||revistagragoata@gmail.com2358-41141413-9073opendoar:2021-03-07T04:55:09Gragoatá - Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF)false
