Um defeito de Cor (2006) by Ana Maria Gonçalves and the limits of representation of slavery

Resumo: The present article aims to take the novel Um defeito de cor (2006) by Ana Maria Gonçalves as a starting point for a reflection on the representation of slavery in both contemporary historiography and prose fiction. Narrating the trajectory of Luiza Mahin, a character mobilized by the Brazilian Black movement,  the novel has, as one of its traits, references and a established dialogue with the recent historiography of slavery. I will demonstrate how the novel and how historiography proper encounter the limitations imposed on these forms of representation of the past because of its ties with theoretical precepts arising from concepts of history, agency and historical time linked to the western modern experience and, in this way, present themselves as impasses for the understanding of these realities.

O presente artigo tem por objetivo tomar o romance Um defeito de cor (2006), de Ana Maria Gonçalves como ponto de partida para uma reflexão a respeito da representação da escravidão na historiografia e na prosa de ficção histórica contemporâneas. Narrando a trajetória de Luiza Mahín, personagem mobilizada pelo movimento negro no Brasil, o romance tem como uma de suas características as referências e o diálogo que mantém com a historiografia recente da escravidão.
