Resumo: The article aims to analyze some aspects of José Rodrigues Leite Oiticica's (1882-1957) proposal for writing of Brazilian history which was presented in “Como se deve escrever a história do Brasil”. It was published in 1910, in Revista Americana, as a replica of the well-known homonymous text by Karl Von Martius (1794-1868), awarded by the IHGB in the 1840s. In view of the insertion of this proposition in a context of criticism of the romantic historiographical tradition current at the end of the 19th century, it is intended to focus on the conceptual and narrative innovations suggested by José Oiticica, considering the way they contribute to the construction of a synoptic view at the history of the Brazilian nation. It is argued that the demand for rewriting the history of Brazil under new theoretical foundations presents itself as a question of politics of time insofar as this “renewal” can be understood as an effort to offer elements, from another political-intellectual repertoire, to solve the “national backwardness” problem.
